Cpgeek.org back online! (vmware server on ubuntu 11.04 at fault)

Hello everybody (the whole 1-2 users who actually take a look at my site every once in a blue moon)! I apologize for the recent outage.

Upon upgrading to the new Ubuntu 11.04 distribution, VMware Server (which is the main operating platform for my web and database servers), refused to compile the kernel modules necessary for loading virtual machines, and thus, the web and database servers couldn’t be booted. After about 2 weeks worth of research, I discovered others were having similar problems and there is now a clear solution to this particular problem (located here if anybody is having similar difficulties).

And now we’re back!

With any luck, the next long batch of downtime will be for the conversion of this site to wordpress (with articles intact hopefully)… Stay tuned for additional information on that.

Cpgeek.org gets huge infrastructure upgrade!

I have successfully switched ISPs for site hosting and things are *much* more stable now. you should note a pretty large improvement in site responsiveness overall and I will probably be expanding a little here and there again!

Congratulations to the OKCupid mobile development team for their release of the completely redesigned OKCupid iPhone app!

The OKCupid mobile app team have completely outdone themselves with a complete rewrite of an app that was already quite good. The redesign includes a much more user-friendly interface that displays all the same information in a much more easily navigated format, especially for users of smaller touch devices like the iPhone, while also improving the interface responsiveness by leaps and bounds. I have seen very few iPhone social apps with this level of polish and I really hope they keep up the good work over there at OKCupid. (read more for details!) Read More >>

PSP2 / NGP

The original Sony PSP was a BRILLIANT handheld console – The power of a ps2 in the palm of your hand. Though it wasn’t without it’s share of drawbacks (my thumb is still aching from that miserable excuse of an analog stick), it brought real current-generation living room gaming hardware to your pocket. (just as the game boy did for the NES, and the game gear did for the genesis), and is still my favorite pocket video game system save my iPhone 4 (mostly because the iPhone already goes everywhere with me, and the iPhone has it’s own set of gaming problems like touch-screen only tactile controls / limited control options). Don’t even get me started on how much of a complete failure the Nintendo DS was (being hugely underpowered in both cpu and gpu, it really only allowed for casual / little kid games). However, the PSP has been out for quite a few years now and is starting to get long in the tooth.
